Scientific Illustration Services

"Scholars are trained to analyze words. But primates are visual animals, and the key to concepts and their history often lies in iconography.
Scientific illustrations are not frills or summaries; they are foci for modes of thought."

Stephen Jay Gould

"Art in the Service of Science"

This office supports the publication and presentation needs of all the biology departments at the University of Connecticut. As Scientific Illustrator, I work with research scientists to develop comprehensive graphics to clarify and augment manuscripts for publication and presentation. This requires a firm grasp of form and design and broad knowledge of plant and animal taxonomy to support research, scholarly publishing and teaching activities in multiple academic departments. Unlike a camera, a good drawing can bring out a function or enhance a particular view. In the case of organisms, it is the Illustrator’s job to unscramble, unbend, and visually reconstruct specimens in a clear, life-like manner. A picture truly enriches a thousand words. The scientists here, as with researchers at other major research universities, require sophisticated, high quality and technically advanced graphics to represent and communicate their research.
